COVID and the Workplace: Are  You Indispensable?

This time of COVID-19 pandemic is also, for many, a time of unemployment and economic turmoil. You may likely know someone who’s been placed on leave or worse–let go. If you have a job, you’re probably very keen to keep it–at least until the economy improves and the virus is either successfully combated with a vaccine or somehow kept in check with current safety protocols. If you’re concerned that your employer may need to make cuts to the workforce, you’ll want to do what you can to ensure you’re not among the unlucky. You may demonstrate that you are an indispensable employee with the following tips, even during this worrisome crisis.

Demonstrate Positivity

Unless you have a serious matter that demands a formal complaint, it’s a good idea to keep small frustrations to yourself. Many employers and employees are on edge, and that makes them irritable. Do your utmost to be positive and cheerful. By brightening your office and everyone you work with, you might find that you elevate your mood. Too much negativity will affect workplace culture. By demonstrating positivity, you’ll not only stand out from the crowd; you’ll help improve the atmosphere of your office environment.

Ramp Up Your Tech Skills

With so many employees working remotely, many employers struggle to find the ideal apps for their workforce. While your company may have an IT department, it’s still a wise move on your part to update your tech skills. When you’re the go-to techie in your department, you will seem indispensable. Let your supervisor know about new apps you’ve explored and that you’re open to additional tech training if it’s needed.

Take on More

During a crisis like the current pandemic, you may be asked to take on additional work with little or nothing to do with your current job and description. Now is the time to be a team player and come through in a crunch. Show company leaders that you’re willing to do what needs to be done. Naturally, you should take stock of your extra work. If you pick up new skills, be sure you update your resume to include them.

Be a Mentor

Sharing your skills is a great way to prove that you are a skilled employee. You can add value to your company by mentoring other employees who may lack your skills or struggle with their issues. If you have any colleagues who find it difficult to manage remote work and personal obligations, help them out. Being a mentor demonstrates your commitment to the workplace team.

Handle Change Gracefully

You might be required to change up your work routine in ways you never imagined. For instance, you may suddenly find yourself working remotely from home. Change can be difficult, but handling it gracefully at this time will be appreciated by your employer. If you’re uncomfortable with how your role is changing in your company, remind yourself that you’re not alone. There will be a time for you to address this discomfort, but for now, try to accept necessary changes as best as you can.

Offer Solutions

If you’ve already committed to keeping workplace problems to yourself, you’ll probably find that others won’t. Rather than commiserate with them, offer solutions. When issues arise in your office or department, provide thoughtful ideas to resolve them. As a general rule, employees who routinely complain aren’t usually popular with their employers. However, if you’re someone who is a genuine problem solver, you’ll stand out from the others and add more value to your role.

Be Inclusive

Can you be everyone’s ‘friend’ in your office? It doesn’t hurt to try. The more allies you have, the better. Try to be inclusive and treat all your colleagues well. You don’t just want to be indispensable to your boss; show that your team also needs you. A productive office has a healthy office culture. Inclusivity is an essential trait that healthy offices possess. Show that you’re trustworthy and reliable to everyone. Now is the time to put your all into your career. Put your best traits forward so your supervisors or managers know your commitment to the company and your willingness to step up your efforts. If you can master these tips, you’ll go a long way to proving that you’re valuable to your company in ways beyond your core job.
