We are currently conducting a very exciting search for a National VP of Sales for our client who is a leading international grower, importer, and distributor of top quality, healthy produce. Annual sales exceed $1.5 billion with operations in Europe, the US, Canada, Central America, South America, and Asia. Activities include the production, procurement, shipping, ripening, distribution, and marketing of bananas, pineapples, melons, and mushrooms. It ranks as the largest importer of bananas in Europe, the No. 1 importer of offshore melons in North America, and is the third largest producer of mushrooms in North America marketing under a variety of very well-known brands and employs over 17,000 people worldwide. This position is based in the Fort Lauderdale / Miami (FL) area.


The Head of Sales will oversee all its sales activities and manage the sales team. He/She will lead a team of ten direct reports and serve as a key member of the executive team, and work with the company’s board members, partners, government entities, port authorities and growers.

The ideal candidate will also be responsible for investigating new venture opportunities, aligned with the company goals and growth objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Accountable for the planning, direction and implementation of the overall sales strategy.

• Conduct a comprehensive review of the existing sales structure and strategy.

• Work closely with the sales team to improve sales process, performance, and accountability for results.

• Investigate and pursue new business development.

Sales Management

• Set activity and revenue targets for members of the sales team.

• Forecast demand and volume fluctuations to best set pricing that maximizes profitability.

• Manage inventory and product allocation to optimize overall sales.

• Regularly report and measure actual performance against target and report on variances.

• Work closely with the marketing team to design and implement marketing programs that promote customer satisfaction and increase sales.

• Develop incentives and strategic plans with the sales managers to increase business with current customers.

• Design and implement a comprehensive category management program for key customers.

• Assure customer satisfaction through a proactive approach, problem identification and problem solving, making customer service a major focus of the business.

• Attend trade shows, industry events and conferences to generate new business leads.

• Act as a spokesperson for the organization at sales events and conferences.

Supply Chain Management

• Interface and coordinate with all functions involved in the customer supply chain, including production, logistics, port operations, and finance.

• Work closely with production to forecast volume projections and address product demand.

• Coordinate with logistics to ensure product availability for key accounts including proposed allocation of volume by customer, and efficiently achieve the customer service goals.

People Management

• Motivate the sales team to achieve the best results possible.

• Set and review individual performance targets to maintain a results-oriented focus on sales growth, margins and profitability.

• Provide leadership and guidance to the sales people to help them in their professional development, facilitate all sales training and development programs.

• Responsible for all aspects of recruitment and selection for the sales department.



  • 5+ years executive sales leadership, 15+ years progressive sales leadership roles
  • Experience selling large volume of perishable product to retailers. preferable fresh produce.
  • Experience dealing with growers in other countries and keen understanding of the logistics
  • A comprehensive knowledge of a grower / packer / shipper / importer business model
  • Experience in the US retail market or other large market internationally with perishable products
  • Successfully driven and led transformational change
  • Proven skills to attract, recruit and retain high performance talent
  • Ability to plan, manage, and operate at both strategic and tactical levels
  • Proven track record of achieving targets and driving sales growth
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, as well as the ability to make presentations
  • Bilingual English / Spanish a plus
